Being able to watch the needle enter the trigger point and avoid important structures can be done using diagnostic ultrasound. This video shows an actual treatment. You can see the needle and even the trigger point. The white with darker shadowing under it to the right of the upper 1/3 of the screen is the first rib. Because we can see what is going on we can prevent a lung puncture while treating the problem.
